The consumerization of enterprise technology has always been present, but the trend is only now gaining widespread attention because of the benefits reaped by allowing employees to use consumer-based services and solutions.
However, such technology still poses serious risks to companies, which is why a recent whitepaper from IDC advised IT and data security professionals to ensure their IT risk management programs are ready for consumerization.
According to the report, it's necessary to prepare for consumerization, but not to try and stop it. That would be impossible given the popularity of certain consumer-based cloud services and the rise of mobile devices not initially intended for enterprise use.
"That's what's critical for CIOs to understand about this consumerization trend; it's going to happen and you can't stop it,"said Andi Mann, vice president of cloud strategy and solutions at CA Technologies, which sponsored IDC's research.
The same can be said of cloud computing, which is why a Gartner analyst recently warned companies to prepare for its deployment. Cloud adoption may not be as widespread as previously thought, but Gartner vice president John Pescatore said that shouldn't stop companies from preparing their IT risk management programs today.
